Indians search on Google with Indian intent. Does your domain extension matter for ranking and trust? Here is what the data and the registrar policies actually say.
.in domains have ID verification requirements
Registering a .in domain (and all second-level .co.in, .net.in, etc.) requires a valid Indian government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar, PAN card, or passport. Foreign residents and NRIs can register .in with a passport. Foreigners with no Indian documentation cannot register .in. Plan for 1–48 hours of manual verification before a new .in domain goes live.

What Google actually does with country-code domains
Google treats .in as a "country code top-level domain" (ccTLD). This means:
By default: Google may show your .in site more prominently to users searching from India, and less prominently to international searchers.
You can override this in Google Search Console → International Targeting → Country → set to "India" for .com sites, or "No targeting" if you want to serve all countries equally.
Practical implication: If your entire audience is in India, .in gives you a slight edge in Indian search results. If you target India AND international customers, .com with India targeting set in Search Console is equally effective.
Trust signals for Indian customers
Anecdotally, .com still carries higher perceived trust among Indian consumers, particularly in:

Choose .com when:

The downside: .com availability is severely limited. Most common words and names are taken. You may end up with a longer, less memorable .com when a cleaner .in is available.

Cons: Lower consumer familiarity; some spam filters are more aggressive with new gTLDs; renewal prices for .store and .tech can be high.
.xyz is the cheapest (₹199/year) but has significant spam association — avoid unless you have a very specific reason.
