What is VPS hosting and how is it different from shared hosting?
VPS (Virtual Private Server) gives you a dedicated slice of a physical server. Unlike shared hosting where CPU and RAM are shared across all accounts, a VPS guarantees your resources. You get root access, your own OS, your own firewall rules, and the ability to install any software. Think of it as the difference between renting a room in a house (shared) vs. renting an entire flat (VPS).
What is the difference between KVM and OpenVZ virtualisation?
KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is true hardware virtualisation — your VPS runs its own OS kernel, just like a physical machine. OpenVZ is container-based and shares the host OS kernel, which means certain OS features and system calls don't work. KVM is what we use. OpenVZ is what some budget hosts use when they advertise cheap "VPS" plans. KVM is more isolated, more compatible, and more reliable.
Can I run Docker and containers on VPS?
Yes. Docker, Docker Compose, Podman, and k3s all work. Since we use KVM, you get a real Linux kernel — so any container technology that works on Linux works on our VPS. You can also run nested virtualisation (VirtualBox, QEMU) on VPS 3.
How quickly is a VPS provisioned after I order?
VPS 1 and VPS 2 are typically live within 90 seconds of payment confirmation. VPS 3 with custom OS takes up to 5 minutes. You receive root credentials and SSH details by email immediately. If there's any delay, our team is notified automatically.
Can I upgrade my VPS without downtime?
CPU and RAM upgrades are live (no reboot) on hosts with available capacity. Disk upgrades require a 15-second reboot for the filesystem to see the new size. You can upgrade from VPS 1 → 2 → 3 at any time, billing prorated. Downgrading requires a migration, which takes under an hour.
Do you offer managed VPS hosting?
Yes. The managed add-on is ₹499/mo. We handle OS patching, firewall rules (UFW/iptables), fail2ban setup, log rotation, SSL renewal, performance monitoring, and monthly security scans. You still have full root access. We never make changes without notifying you first.
What operating systems can I run?
Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 LTS, Debian 12, AlmaLinux 9, Rocky Linux 9, CentOS Stream 9, and Arch Linux are available from our image library. On VPS 3, you can upload and boot from your own ISO. Windows Server 2022 is available at ₹2,999/mo license add-on.
Is the IP address dedicated to me?
Yes. Each VPS includes one dedicated IPv4 address and one /128 IPv6 address. These are exclusively yours — not shared with other customers. Additional IPv4 addresses are available at ₹149/mo each (subject to ARIN/APNIC justification for 5+).
What happens when I hit my bandwidth limit?
We email you at 80% of monthly bandwidth. At 100%, traffic is throttled to 1 Mbps rather than disconnected — so your site stays up. You can purchase additional bandwidth or upgrade your plan at any point during the month.
Can I run a game server, crypto node, or media streaming server?
Yes, as long as it's legal and doesn't abuse shared network infrastructure. We specifically allow: game servers (Minecraft, CS:GO, Valheim), crypto nodes (Ethereum, Solana, etc.), media streaming (Jellyfin, Plex), VPN servers (WireGuard, OpenVPN). Prohibited: open mail relays, open DNS resolvers, spam tools, botnets.
Is DDoS protection included?
Yes. All VPS plans include 10 Gbps volumetric DDoS scrubbing via Cloudflare Magic Transit and in-house filtering. We've successfully mitigated attacks exceeding 40 Gbps without customer downtime. Application-layer (L7) DDoS protection is available as an add-on via Cloudflare Pro.
What monitoring do I get?
CPU, RAM, disk IOPS, network throughput, and TCP connection count are displayed in real time in your dashboard. Uptime monitoring pings your VPS every 30 seconds. You set your own alert thresholds. We also alert you if disk usage exceeds 80%.
Can I have multiple VPSes on a private network?
Yes. Private VLAN between your VPSes in the same region is free and available to all plans. This lets you run a web server, database server, and Redis on separate VPSes with private network communication — without any traffic going over the public internet.
Do you have servers in India?
Yes. All VillageHosting VPS nodes are physically located in India — Chennai, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Indian servers mean 10–30ms latency for Indian users, DPDP Act compliance, and data sovereignty for Indian business data. We do not route Indian traffic through Singapore or overseas nodes.
What is your refund policy for VPS hosting?
30-day full refund. If you're not satisfied within 30 days, we refund the full amount with no questions asked. After 30 days, we can offer prorated refund at our discretion. If our infrastructure fails to meet SLA, credits are issued automatically.
